Context:
Inspired by the French painters Nicolas Poussin and Simon Vouet, Gerard de Lairesse was the leading classical artist and theorist in the Netherlands during the 17th century. This picture depicts an event from Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. The nymph Calypso had entrapped the Greek hero Odysseus; the Olympian gods ordered his release. Here, Hermes swoops down to free Odysseus, who is entwined in Calypso's embrace. She however seems unaware of Hermes, however, and stares out directly at the viewer.
