Pair of Short BootsOuter fabrics: weft-faced compound twill, silk; tapestry, silk and gold;tabby, silk; gauze, silk; silk batting; leatherLiao Dynasty (907-1125), 1000s-1125The Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund 1992.349 & 1992.350(Cat. no.10)The fabric and tailoring of garments have always defined social status. Forthese boots, different outer fabrics were used: a patterned silk for theleg portion, and tapestry (kesi) for the foot. Since both were consideredluxury fabrics, they were piecedtogether from remnants too precious todiscard. Consequently, the silk pattern was not used in relation to theform of the boot, as seen in the Imperial Boots (cat no. 23). By contrast, these boots would have been made for a court official, not a member oftheimperial family. The patterned silk was woven with geese flanking a vase of flowers on astand and surrounded by cloud scrolls. The Chinese motif of flowersarranged in a vase was adopted by the Liao during the 11th century andindicates an 11th- or early12th-century date for the boots.
