Context:
Mangbetu craftsmen ornamented objects such as pottery vessels, knives, and musical instruments with human faces and figures. These luxurious goods were used by the nobility, and also presented as gifts to European colonial authorities. This vessel portrays a high-born Mangbetu woman with an elongated head, fan-shaped coiffure, and painted facial decoration. The woman's beautiful profile is characteristic of works produced in a Niangara workshop under the patronage of the great chief Okondo.
