Context:
This spontaneous and freely painted work helped introduce the exuberant Baroque style in Italy. Annibale Carracci turned his attention to an ordinary person engaged in an everyday activity, in this case a boy drinking the last drops of wine from his glass. The deliberately awkward pose captures a moment in time, while the energetic brushwork depicts the complicated distortions and refractions of light as it passes through glass. In 1582 the artist, together with his brother Agostino and his cousin Ludovico, founded an art academy in Bologna, dedicated to observing and painting the natural world. The academy trained a number of artists, many of whom were to form the great school of Bolognese painting during the 17th century.
