Context:
Harriet Hosmer is probably the best known female member of a group of American artists living in Italy during the mid-1800s. With The Sleeping Faun, she sought to demonstrate her mastery of the neoclassical style, which was inspired by the art of ancient Greece and Rome. Along with the sleeping faun (a pointy-eared woodland spirit), Hosmer's composition includes a mischievous young satry (half-human, half-goat), who uses the faun's animal skin to tie him to the tree stump.
