Hercules Resting is a final compositional study for a fresco of the same subject on the ceiling of the Camerino Farnese in the Farnese Palace in Rome. The ceiling represents the virtue of Hercules, seen here resting after his twelve labors, the life-threatening adventures that the goddess Juno caused him to undertake. At the lower right is the head of the Erymanthian boar he captured. At his feet are the three golden apples he took from the garden of the Hesperides. Lightly sketched in at the right is a figure of the Sphinx from Thebes, birthplace of Hercules. This part of the composition is squared in black chalk, for transferring the image to another sheet. At the lower left is an indication of the frame, which is in an oval format in the fresco. The vertical crease at the center is a backmark, caused during the papermaking process, when the paper was laid over a stick or rope to dry.Annibale Carracci played the leading role in the movement toward naturalism and idealism in Italian painting at the end of the 1500s. His figures, drawn from life, reflect the influence of both Renaissance painting and ancient Roman sculpture.
