Context:
|
Portraying a theme familiar since the time of the Song dynasty (960-1279), this painting presents a vivid rendering of oxen wading through a stream in a leisurely manner. Thus the artist, Guo Min, inscribed a simple poem at the upper right of the scroll:Together, the oxen wade through the center of the stream,Unaware of the perils in the journey. The grass grows tall in the village ahead,As the mist and rain spread far and wide.Paintings dating from the very beginning of the Yuan dynasty are exceedingly rare. Consequently, this hanging scroll represents a major addition to the museum's collection of Chinese paintings.
