Context:
|
Portraying a theme familiar since the time of the Song dynasty (960-1279), this painting presents a vivid rendering of oxen wading through a stream in a leisurely manner. Thus the artist, Guo Min, inscribed a simple poem at the upper right of the scroll:The bulls are engaged in fighting;Cautiously, each seeks to overcome the other. The herdboy calmly stands by.Untying his belt, he silently watches.Paintings dating from the very beginning of the Yuan dynasty are exceedingly rare. Consequently, this hanging scroll represents a major addition to the museum's collection of Chinese paintings.
