Context:
The two Dassy brothers, Jean-Baptiste (age 23) and René-Charles (age 24), were born into an old and prosperous French family. Dressed in the height of 1850s men's fashion Jean-Baptiste (left) wears an outdoor costume, notably a redingote (short overcoat), and carries gloves and a riding crop or a thin walking stick, a stylish accessory often found illustrated in fashion magazines of the period. René-Charles (right) wears an indoor outfit of embroidered black velvet in an exotic mode known at the time as à la Grec ("like the Greek"-inspired by the Greek War of Independence of 1821-1832). The clothing of the two brothers indicates both elegance and refinement, and clearly asserts their social status. Their intimate pose also suggests their close relationship, emphasized by their matching signet rings, and the affectionate placement of the older brother's hand on the younger brother's shoulder.Double portraiture has been a durable tradition since the Renaissance. It was revived in 19th century France with Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Edgar Degas (1834-1917), who is known to have admired this painting, would pursue the art of double portraiture in many of his family portraits.Flandrin is the most famous pupil of the painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), of whom he was also a disciple and close friend. Flandrin is best known for the church murals he painted in Paris, Lyon, and Nîmes, but is equally admired for his portraiture. His works are very rare in American collections.
