Context:
|
The virtue of these robust and idealized peasants is underscored by the inclusion of the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, which looms in the distance. Tourists as well as visiting artists believed that the true spirit of Rome could be found in simple peasants. The mother and child depicted here recall the Madonnas painted by Raphael during the Renaissance, almost 400 years earlier.Trained in the traditional, realistic techniques of the French Academy, Bouguereau was among the most popular painters of his age. Accomplished drawing, meticulous execution, and smooth surface texture are hallmarks of his style. His sentimental images appealed especially to American collectors. In 1879, Hinman Hurlbut, a wealthy banker, bought this picture directly from the artist for his home in Cleveland.
