Context:
Greuze is best known for his exquisitely painted scenes of everyday life with moralizing messages. He was also an outstanding portraitist because of his ability to capture the subtle psychology of his sitters. This small painting combines the tactile beauty of his representations of costume with the gripping image of one of the perpetrators of the Reign of Terror following the French Revolution.
