Subject Description:
Sometimes painted and used during the lifetime of the individual, mummy portraits were fitted onto the mummified and wrapped remains of the dead in place of the idealized images used in earlier eras. The young man wears a golden leafy wreath, perhaps applied after death. These paintints are often called 'Fayum portraits' after the region where many were found.
