Subject Description:
Roman republican law and custom forbade the representation of any living person on its coinage, although one's name could appear, as on this obverse. Therefore Marcellinus incorporated his famous ancestor's portrait and accomplishments on his coin. Marcus Claudius Macellus conquored the Gaul Viridomarus in 222 B.C. and was five times elected consul.
