Subject Description:
Here we see the Kamigata (Kyoto-Osaka region) actor Nakamura Noshio II as Tonase, dressed for the bridal journey. As a woman of the samurai class, she wears a special headdress (tsuno-kakushi) to protect her hair from the dust of travel, and she carries a 'snake's eye' umbrella (janome-gasa). She also wears a pair of swords thrust through her sash, since she is acting in place of her samurai husband in this important family business. Shun'ei brings all his skills as a painter of beautiful women to this lovely design, arching the figure into a broad curve that fills the page. The face, which looks modestly down, has the thick, sensual eyelashes and slightly aquiline nose seen in his paintings, and the lines of the kimono, decorated with a pattern of snow-covered willow branches, drop in long, flowing strokes. The crimson sash and kimono lining (somewhat faded in the impression) provide a shock of color against the otherwise quietly elegant green robes and matte gray background. Off-center placing of the figure has the effect of making this gray space seem to resonate in some mysterious and compelling manner.
