Subject Description:
Arashi Hinaji I as Musume Dojo-ji is shown holding the rope of the large bronze bell which hangs from the branch of a snow-covered pine. She has shrugged her over-kimono (uchikake) off her shoulders to reveal the triangular snake-scale pattern (uroko-gata) of the kimono, and her long hair hangs down in a wild ponytail that will whip through the air like a snake as she dances. The form of Shunsho's signature suggests that the print dates from the early 1770s, but no theatrical records survive describing Hinaji I in such a role during this period. The snow-laden pine suggests that on this occasion 'Dojo-ji' had been adapted to serve as a dance sequence (shosagoto) in the snow, such a sequence having become obligatory in opening-of-the-season (kaomise) productions, which began about the eleventh month each year and ran for about six weeks. (The Actor's Image, 1994)
