Context:
Chagall painted the first version of "The Praying Jew" during a visit to his native city Vitebsk in 1914. The visit was prolonged by the outbreak of the First World War. On his return to Paris in 1923, Chagall painted two copies of the work. According to Chagall's autobiography, the sitter was an itinerant beggar invited to pose in the white-and-black thalis (prayer shawl) and phylacteries (leather boxes containing scriptural passages) of the artist's father. There are 3 versions of the painting of the rabbi. The first is in the collection Im Obersteg, Bern. The second is in the Collection of the Museo d'Arte Moderna, Venice, bought from the Venice Biennale 1928 and inscribed "No 2 Paris" under signature on recto. The AIC's is the third.
