Subject Description:
Gallery Label:Sesshu Toyo was one of the leading painters of the Muromachi period (1392-1568). A Buddhist priest of the Zen sect, Sesshu became famous for his unique transformation of classical Chinese painting styles of the southern Song dynasty (1127-1275). This pair of screens depicts a river landscape that subtly incorporates a gradual seasonal change form spring (far right ) to winter (left background).
