Context:
Pisanello is considered to be the most important Italian representative of the International Gothic style, which marked the end of tight medieval craftsmanship and the beginning of the Renaissance exploration of the natural world. His drawings are exceedingly rare. This sheet is a study for a medallion created by Pisanello to commemorate the visit of John VIII Palaeologus, Emperor of Byzantium, to Ferrara on the occasion of the Council of Ferrara-Florence in 1438.
