Subject Description:
Gallery Label:European merchants, known as Namban ('Southern barbarians'), became a popular subject of decoratiove screen painting soon after their arrival in Japan during the sixteenth century. These screens sepict the arrival of the Portuguese. They are shown with elongated bodies, red hair, and long nosees, and they are dressed in elaborate costumes of short capes, colonial style 'bombacha' pantaloons, pointed shoes,and tall hats with broad rims.The left screen presents the tall-masted, foreign ship crowded with merchants and sailors. Two small boats disembark to unload exotic products and to bring the first officer to shore. Japanese residents set up lunch by the shore to observe the curious event. Decorative patterns of golden clouds and pine trees unify the two screens.The right screen features the captain with his servants holding a parasol, the ship's banner, the captain's, and a jug of wine. Missionaries from different monastic orders anxiously await the arival of the officer.
