Context:
|
This drawing relates to Raphael's two most important late commissions: the 'Transfiguration' altarpiece, now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, and the frescoed decoration of the walls of the Sala di Costantino, the largest of the papal apartments in the Vatican. The gesture in the drawing is reminiscent of that of Christ in the 'Transfiguration', but connects more precisely with the upraised right arm and hand of 'Saint Peter', located on the east wall of the Sala di Costantino.
