Context:
Now on loan to the exhibition Gian Lorenzo Bernini: Master of the Baroque at the Palazzo Venezia in Rome until September 16, 1999, this bronze bust of Pope Clement X was recently attributed to Bernini. Research in the Altieri family archives indicates that this bust may be the lost bronze modeled by Bernini after a portrait of Emilio Altieri (who became Pope Clement X in 1670) painted by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, who also oversaw the casting of the bronze.
