Context:
One of the Four Fathers of the Catholic Church, Saint Ambrose (334?-397 A.D.) was Bishop of Milan, once the administrative center of the western part of the Roman Empire. He is shown with a knotted scourge to signify that he drove the Arian heretics from the Church. This is generally considered the most important painting by this artist in North America.
