Context:

This large pole features a pair of figures, male and female, probably representing clan ancestors. The female figure stands on a pig's head, which may connect the piece to bush clans, clans who originate in the inland, or bush of New Ireland. The circular design at the center, called an "eye of fire" in many New Ireland languages, refers to the sun, to a family hearth, and the idea of centrality or focus.
