Context:
|
The frontal pose and simplified facial features of this head are characteristic of Roman portrait sculpture after the reign of Constantine the Great (306-337 A.D.). The focus of portraiture now shifted away from realistic depictions of outward physical features, concentrating instead on the expression of the inner, spiritual self, as represented by this young man's upturned gaze. |
