Pub Note:
1st edition. This is the pocket map form of a map that was usually issued as a wall map. Two folding sheets, one with the U.S. map and the other with the 32 cities maps forming a border around tables of statistics from the 1840 census. The graphic look of this map we find strange for a map drawn by J.H. Young, although the engraver was J.H. Brightly and that may account for the difference from the usual Young style. Full color by state. The two sheets fold into brown leather covers 18.5x11.5 with a brass clasp, with title "Mitchell's National Map of the United States. 8-1/2 South 7th Street, Philadelphia. Price One Dollar & Fifty Cents" embossed on the front cover in gilt; the back cover is embossed with an eagle and a banner running across clouds reading "E. Pluribus Unum" over the globe labeled "United States" in gilt.
