Author Henry Berghaus, actually Heinrich Karl Wilhelm Berghaus, was one of the most important German map makers of the 19th Century. This map is a part of a brief intensive effort in the 19th Century by Prussian chart makers to produce sea charts of South America. This was perhaps stimulated by the comprehensive study done by Alexander von Humboldt and German interest in commerce and exploration of the region.
