Date estimated. Features wonderful vignettes of singers with a couple of bars of music for each named regional piece. Includes a decorative border with various musical instruments, songs and Native American symbols. The extensive text section within scroll borders at the top of the map "Explanation to Illustrations and Music on Map" includes a "Key to Musical Classification on Map" (classifying songs as ballads, cowboy songs, railroad gang songs, Negro songs etc. and giving state and number on the map). This is cross-referenced in the "Numerical Key to Musical Classification on Map." There is also a "Key to Illustrations in Border" naming the instruments (which include Indian Water Drum and Bull Fiddle) and a "Bibliography".

Mounted on canvas. Date estimated. In 1939 opera singer and researcher Dorothea Dix Lawrence (1899-1979) created the radio program "Primer of American Music" (sponsored by the Pennsylvania Board of Education). In 1946 this "Folklore Music Map of the United States," a collaboration between Lawrence and woodcut artist and illustrator Harry Cimino (1898-1969) (who is attributed at lower right of the map) collaborated to produce this fascinating piece of Americana.
