The first geological map of Britain, indeed of any country in the world, was published by William Smith (1769-1839) in 1815.

Laid in the portfolio are two short books on geology published by Reynolds: "Raynolds' outline of science and art. Geology. 1858." in 20 pages, and "Geological notes by John Morris, F.G.S." in 8 folded pages. The set place in embossed red covers with the title in gilt.
