Pub Note:
"A beautiful and very rare wall map of the world drawn on Mercator's projection by the geographer Alexandre Vuillemin, engraved in color by Langevin and published by the widow of Louis Turgis in Paris in 1854. It is decorated with six vignettes depicting fishing scenes: sperm whale fishing south of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), whale fishing, a boat attacked by polar bears and a vessel caught in the ices in the Arctic, herring fishing off the British Isles, and cod fishing in Newfoundland. The lower part of the map is illustrated with three large vignettes showing a profile of the height of the main mountains and cities of America from Cape Horn to Cape Farewell (Greenland), a profile of the height of the main mountains and cities of Europe and Africa from North Cape (Norway) to the Cape of Good Hope, and a table showing the geographical distribution of human races. The map also shows the possessions or trading posts belonging to France, England, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Denmark, Holland and the United States." (Begonia Le Bail, 2021)
