"Copper engraved view of Santiago de Chile, by Brambila, ca. 1798. One of the most influent views of Chile's Capital city, engraved by Brambila “Brambila lo delineó y gravó”. Brambila (1763 – 1832) was an Italian artist of considerably ability; in 1789 he joined Alejandro Malaspina’s scientific expedition as the official draughtsman. The crew included scientists, professional sailors and other artists. The position allowed him to visit Argentina & Chile –traveling by foot on occasions-, as well as Guam, Macau, the Philippines, amongst others. So celebrated were his designs made during the voyage, that in 1798, upon his return to Madrid, he was appointed “Pintor de Cámara”. Malaspina´s voyage came in a difficult time for Spain; as a result the monumental work that had been planned never came to light. After five years at sea Malaspina returned home in 1794 and found the political situation of Spain not to his liking: his liberal tendencies led to his imprisonment in 1796 and exile after his release in 1802. His seven-volume account of his expedition was suppressed and remained unpublished until the late 19th century." (HS Rare Books, 2021)
