"Beginning in the 18th century, the pictorial landscape genre began to employ the veduta, a style developed in the city of Venice, which consisted of urban scenes based on perspective and a panoramic gaze, also including highly descriptive details. Already in the 16th century, Flemish engravers had been developing the printing of aerial images of cities and drafting with perspective. In Chile, these images were developed by travelers as a kind of panoramic postcard. This practice was framed as a scientific approach to landscape, attempting to describe it with detailed information. This process used instruments that made it possible to produce a faithful representation of nature, such as the camera obscura and later photography. One of the first examples of this technique can be observed in five lithographs by Agostino Aglio, based on the drawings of William Waldegrave (1796-1838). Created in 1821, when Waldegrave, an English sailor, was in Santiago, together they produce a 360-degree view of the city that was published as A series of panoramic views of Sant Jago, the capital of Chili, edited in London by John Boosey in 1823. It is an extraordinary document for the urban history of Santiago, since it depicts the city with great precision and high artistic quality." Uncut; five lithograph views on india paper, some light foxing and wear to edges, overall fresh and clean, with considerable contemporary inscriptions explaining the views. First edition. An exceedingly rare work, not traced by Palau and neither does appear to be in Sabin, and a special copy, heavily inscribed by a contemporary hand describing the city and what the views show.
