All text appears in Russian, except for the translated title pages. Atlas comprised of 37 maps of areas within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.), as well as the entire U.S.S.R. and of the world. Maps show political boundaries, cities, railways, roads, steamship routes, topography, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines and islands. Maps accompanied by extensive descriptive text, which follows plates, on separate pages. A legend pertaining to all maps precedes the maps. Maps and legend are in the form of colored lithographs. Atlas provides a holistic cartographic picture of the U.S.S.R., first placing it within its global context with a world map, then showing the entirety of the Soviet Union, and finally featuring the individual regions in detail. Historically significant work, due to the temporal nature of the U.S.S.R., a country that spanned much of Eurasia from 1922 until 1991, and has since experienced dissolution into separate nations. The geographic footprint of those nations appears here in the form of regions within the former U.S.S.R.
