Pub Note:
"British Columbia Road Closures / Fall 1953 / Ferry Schedule Detailed Road Report of major roads in the interior of British Columbia, illustrating travel routes in the province, published by the British Columbia Government Travel Bureau. At first glance, this map has two fascinating elements: (1) the use of pictographs to communicate road conditions and detours and (2) 50% of the roads shown are under construction, including the entirety of the John Hart Highway. Extending north to Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, this fascinating map, published by the British Columbia Government Travel Bureau, illustrates the status of the roads for the Fall of 1953 in British Columbia, along with the routes of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. The map identifies types of roads (paved, gravel, under construction and proposed) along with a fascinating set of symbols, which show: the length of road closures the length of construction proejcts the availability and length of paved detour roads around construction projects the availability and length of dirt, gravel or lesser paved detour roads around construction projects routes open, but detours advisable. The map also gives the schedule for the winter season (October to June 1) for the Kootenay-Balfour Ferry and the summer season for the Kelowna - Westbank Ferry. Two distance tables are shown bottom left." (Ruderman, 2022)
