"Hoping to link their colonies in Algeria to those in Senegal by rail, French politicians and business interests began agitating unrest in Morocco in the late 19th century. Conflict culminated in 1907 with the naval bombardment of Casablanca and a full-on invasion. A forced treaty in 1912 saw the establishment of a French protectorate that would remain in place until the arrival of deposed Sultan Muhammad V in 1955. The following year, a signed agreement signaled the end of the official French presence in Morocco, though their influence remains visible to this day. This map, originally published in a French guidebook, is an excellent example of the residual French legacy. Casablanca is divided into various sectors labeled in bright red. Routes of trolleys and busses are noted in the same vibrant shade. Various locations of interest are noted according to the legend in the upper left. Originally issued in Guides Pol, edited by Bererd Francis and probably published in 1964, according to text in the lower center. Printed in Lyon by the firm of Sezanne." (Curtis Wright, 2023)
