Pub Note:
"This fascinating plan of central Moscow was published by Intourist, the U.S.S.R.’s national tourism agency, in 1962. The ongoing Cuban Missile Crisis that year saw the world on the brink of nuclear war, though apparently this did not restrict the publication of maps aimed at English-speaking visitors. The image highlights Moscow’s impressive cultural history and incredible architecture, with dozens of small vignettes representing iconic locations like the Kremlin, St. Basel’s Cathedral, and Moscow State University. The accompanying text at the bottom of the sheet provides a brief summary of the city – “the major political, economic, and cultural centre of the USSR.” Additional text on the verso provides helpful details for the overseas traveler, including details on attractions, plan of the Moscow Underground, a map of Greater Moscow, and a list of amenities like hotels and service stations. The information presented provides a fascinating window into the life of Cold-War era Moscow. For example, diesel fuel is obtainable only through coupons provided by Intourist bureaus."
