Portulano de las cóstas de la peninsula de España, islas adjacentes, y parte de la costa de Africa. By Felipe Bauzá. Published in 1813 by Dirección Hidrografica, Cádiz. Folio. Bound in later half calf, with stamped spine title. Includes a title page. Atlas comprised of 70 nautical charts. Charts represent coastal regions of France, Spain, and Portugal, showing islands, cities, topography, coastlines, bays, ports, anchorage, beaches, drainage, and depths. Relief shown with hachure lines and shading. Many charts are oriented in relation to castles, towers, and capes along the coasts. Extremely rare Spanish sea atlas. Bauzá assisted Tofiño de San Miguel (1787-1789) in his work on the more famous atlas of the Spanish coasts, Atlas marítimo de España (1789). Bauzá’s own portulano, however, is much more detailed. It is a compendium of the latest information for navigators of the coasts, created to aid the Spanish navy in the struggle against Napoleon. The charts show numerous hitherto unmapped features of the coast and detailed information of the water depths for each port and inlet to help ships avoid capsizing or running aground. The customary secrecy with which the Dirreción Hidrografica operated, especially vital during war, likely accounts for the rarity of this atlas. Felipe Bauzá (1764-1843) was a Spanish cartographer, navigator, and naval officer. Bauza participated in the Malaspina expedition (1789–1794), a five-year maritime scientific exploration commanded by Alessandro Malaspina and José de Bustamante y Guerra. He became director of Dirección Hidrografica, which drafted maps based on reports from the most recent Spanish navigators. His cartographic accomplishments were also known abroad, as he became a member of the Royal Society of London in 1819. He was exiled to London at the end of his life, having been an opponent of Fernando VII, King of Spain. Much of his work was purchased by the British Library and is housed in the Bauzá Maps Collection.
