Slipcase bound in blue fabric with paste-on featuring the printed title. Includes cut-out, revealing embossed train on cover beneath. Published by Государственное Транспортное Железнодорожное издательство [= State Transport Railway Publishing House] in Moscow, 1935. In total, atlas includes three maps and numerous views and portraits. Luxuriously illustrated work. Issued to the VII All-Union Congress of Soviets. Put into production on December 10, 1934; issued on January 27, 1935. In an edition of 5000 copies, this copy includes a slip of paper indicating it is number 530. When reproducing the illustrations the following techniques were used: gravure printing, photographic technique, etching, lithography, three-color printing, gilding. The design and layout of the work, as well as many of the drawings within it, are by Russian avant-garde artist Nikolaĭ Troshin. The work is designed in the style of late Constructivism, and is distinguished by a large number of photo collages and photomontage. This work presents the achievements of the Soviet railway industry. It was designed to show what had evolved in all areas of railroad transport. Railways were given special attention, because it was with their help that all transportation of raw materials, equipment and products was achieved. Railway transportation had a profound effect on the growth of the USSR. As with other publications of this time, the work’s compilers relied on vivid visual images and accompanied them with only the barest minimum of explanatory texts. The main article of the work deals with the development of railroad transportation during the first two five-year period in figures and facts. The work illustrates the tasks faced by the railroad industry and its resulting achievements, as well as the shortcomings. The photos depict the construction of new railroads, reinforced concrete and steel bridges, mountain tunnels, new methods of mechanized embankments and track laying, cleaning of tracks from snow drifts. The work highlights the contrast between the methods of work that existed before the October Revolution and those that were introduced afterwards, in the 1930s. It shows the development of heavy railroad engineering, the creation of new repair plants and workshops, and the construction of new stations. New railroads connected old industrial centers and newly built industrial areas, such as the Kuznetsk Metallurgical Basin. Included in this volume are descriptions of electric locomotives ("Vladimir Lenin", "PB") as well as diesel locomotives, which were capable of moving through deserts in the absence of water. The process of improving the social security of railway workers is also illustrated, including the construction of new apartments, schools, and extracurricular activities. Attention is paid also to women's labor, sports and training. Overall, the work demonstrates significant progress on many fronts. Historical notes courtesy Russian Bibliophile, Moscow.
