Sanborn map of Newport, R.I. For the exclusive use of Whipple & Son, Agents. Sanborn-Perris Map Co. Limited. 117 Broadway, New York.
Pub Note:
Sanborn map of Newport, R.I. by the Sanborn-Perris Map Co. Published in New York in 1891. Bound in paper with maroon fabric spine. Sewn binding. Cover includes the copyright and use information, which is repeated on the verso of each map throughout the volume. The map is dissected into 19 sheets, which appear in numbered order. Additionally, an index map precedes the sheets, showing the configuration of the sheets in the geographical area that they represent. The map title and imprint appears on the index sheet. The map shows railroads, roads and buildings, which are labeled by use, including dwellings, hotels, schools, churches, chicken coops and businesses, such as "dress making". Building footprints, heights and materials are also indicated (by color), as well as the number of floors, rooms per structure and features, including doors, windows, chimneys and elevators. Additionally, the map depicts addresses, lot lines, street widths, water pipes, hydrants, and cisterns, as well as the shoreline with the harbor. Each sheet includes a scale statement, compass rose and descriptive notes throughout. An explanation of the color, key and legend are provided by the Library of Congress, here: https://www.loc.gov… (hyperlink available in the Pub Reference field). Sheet 6 appears twice, with variation. The first appearance of the sheet follows the conventions of the other sheets. The second appearance is duplicative with the outlines of the buildings but it omits labels, and it is printed in black and white. “Fire insurance maps are produced to provide information to insurers about the composition and use of buildings in order to provide correct underwriting of policies. These maps, primarily produced in the United States by the Sanborn Company, are now historically important documents of the towns and cities from the start of the late 19th Century … [and] are now used to study the history of a place by historians, genealogists, urban planners, and ethnic studies.” - Julie Sweetkind-Singer of Stanford University. https://exhibits.st…
