Orthographic atlas of the moon : Supplement number one to the Photographic lunar atlas. Compiled by D. W. G. Arthur and E. A. Whitaker; produced with the technical assistance of the Air Force Aeronautical Chart and Information Center; Gerard P. Kuiper, Editor. Edition A : Showing the Standard orthographic coordinate grid. Part 1 : Central area. Contributions, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, No. 1. The University of Arizona Press, 1960.
Pub Note:
The Orthographic atlas of the moon : Supplement one was published in 1961 by The University of Arizona Press. It contains two parts: Part 1 created in 1960, and Part 2 in 1961. Part 1 includes 31 sheets with 34 photographs and 2 charts; Part 2, 32 sheets with 37 photographs and 1 chart. Together, the volume consists of a total 63 sheets with 65 photographs and 3 charts. According to the Introduction: the most representative photographs of each of the 44 fields or provinces into which the visible lunar surface was divided in the Photographic lunar atlas are reproduced, supplied with the standard orthographic grid ... The Orthographic atlas is a supplement to the Photographic lunar atlas, published in 1960 by The University of Chicago Press (see Pub List No. 14057.000). In addition, the Orthographic atlas was followed by a second supplement: the Rectified lunar atlas : Supplement two, published in 1963 by the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, United States Air Force (see Pub List No. 14059.000). The purpose of the Photographic lunar atlas “is to present the surface record of the moon as shown on the best photographs now available” (Introduction). The Rectified lunar atlas contains "a series of high-quality photographs of the lunar surface as it would appear if viewed from above" (Introduction). Note on terminology: photographs and charts are differentiated here as follows - photographs are the original representations of the moon, in black and white, and without the overlay of interpretive graphics and text; charts are those same base images, in either brown or blue and white, mediated by overlaid interpretive graphics and text. One could even consider the photographs as art and the charts as maps.
