Pub Title:
The struggle for five years in four. State Publishing House of Fine Arts, Moscow, USSR.
Pub Note:
The struggle for five years in four with infographics on the USSR by Ivan Petrovich Ivanitzky. Published in Moscow in 1932 by the State Publishing House of Fine Arts, Moscow, USSR. Edited by L. Kogan, and with art editing by S. A. Abramov. With drawings by Mesheriakov, Ushakova, Kirpichev, Abramova, Arngold, Gladun, Kviatkovsky, Lebedeva and Ivanitzkaya. Distributed by Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga of Moscow. The work is comprised of 70 loose sheets that are stacked in sequence within the original chemise, which is housed inside a contemporary box with a gilt spine title. The first 6 unnumbered sheets contain a title page, two colophons, foreword and 2-page table of contents. The following 64 numbered sheets present 1 map and 63 isotype diagrams. The map shows trade union membership, by districts, in the USSR, while the diagrams represent an array of government statistics on subjects varying from shoe and sugar beet production to the number of students attending universities, workers' universities, technical and factory schools. Data visualization translates the statistics into easily comprehensible concepts and delightful images. Isotypes are a method of representing social, historical, biological, and technological information using a set of standardized pictorial symbols. The method was developed in Vienna between 1925 and 1934 and was originally known as the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics. Ivan Petrovich Ivanitzky (1896–1970) was a Soviet graphic designer and infographics pioneer. Ivanitzky was drafted into the  Russian Imperial Army in 1915. His right hand was wounded during the war and for the rest of his life he was left-handed. By 1920 he had settled in Saint Petersburg where he worked for the publishing house Начатки знаний (Beginnings of Knowledge), a cultural and educational partnership that produced educational material concerning the natural sciences and children's literature. In 1930 he started work with Ленизогиза (Lenizogiz), where he headed the department dealing with graphical statistics, and was responsible for the preparation and processing of graphic material. His art director here, Otto Neurath, invented the isotype. In 1932 he published Изобразительная статистика и венский метод (Figurative Statistics and the Vienna Method). Historical notes from Ursus Books, New York.
