Includes latitudinal and longitudinal lines, as well as a scale statement, legend and compass rose with north oriented leftward. Descriptive notes throughout. Colored lithograph. Atlas der Bodenbeschaffenheit des Meeres by Deutschen Seewarte [German Maritime Observatory]. Published in Hamburg in 1943. Title translates to: Atlas of the bottom of the sea. It was created for use by German submarines during World War II. According to the introduction, "The atlas is intended to show the nature of the seabed in an easily understandable form." The atlas appears in 11 deliveries, which are bound within 9 volumes (deliveries 1 and 2 are bound together, as well as deliveries 5 and 6). In total, the atlas contains 455 nautical charts. Each delivery focuses on different geographical areas: 1. North Sea and German Bight — 2. British and French Channel coasts — 3. British West Coast, Irish Sea, East and South Coast of Ireland — 4. Southern Baltic Sea — 5. West coast of Ireland — 6. Shetland Islands, Iceland and the Faroe Islands — 7. Eastern Mediterranean (1. The south and southeast coast of Sicily and the Maltese Islands - 2. The coasts of North Africa and Asia Minor - 3. The Sea of ​​Marmara with the Dardanelles and Bosporus - 4. The Black Sea) — 8. Central Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Bothnia, waters between the Baltic and North Seas — 9. West coast of Africa between 7° and 34° north latitude — 10. White Sea and Kola Bay — 11. The Atlantic coasts of France, Spain and Portugal and the Strait of Gibraltar. Bound in board, the volumes are covered in green paper and secured with black cord. All of the front covers and title pages contain the text: Nur für den Dienstgebrauch! [= For official use only!]. Additionally, each cover and title page is printed with the emblem of Nazi Germany - an eagle holding a swastika. However, the swastikas are obscured with ink on deliveries 5, 6, 9 and 10. The verso of each front cover is printed with text that translates to, "This is a secret item within the meaning of Section 88 of the Reich Criminal Code (version of April 24, 1934). Misuse will be punished according to the provisions of this law, unless other penal provisions apply." Each delivery includes a title page, introductory text, table of contents and at least one index map. The introductions explain the geographic coverage as well as the resources used to compile the data, such as preexisting German and British nautical charts. Deliveries 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11 also include legends pertaining to the nautical charts. The charts feature soil types, hardness and stone deposits under the water. They also show cities, roads and railways in the vicinity, topography, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines, islands and water depths given in fathoms. Relief shown with hachures. Charts include latitudinal and longitudinal lines, as well as scale statements, legends, compass roses and descriptive notes throughout. The scales range from 1,000,000 to 8,400. The charts are printed by colored lithography. Some of the deliveries have bookplates on the front covers or stamped title pages indicating various provenance. For instance, deliveries 5, 6 and 9 have the bookplate: Dr J. N. Carruthers, Hydrographic Department (Oceanographical Section), Admiralty, Oxgate Lane Cricklewood, London, N.W.2.
