Pierre Joseph Aimé Pissis (in Spanish Pedro José Amadeo Pissis), was a French geologist who studied at the School of Mines, the Polytechnic and at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. He carried out geological and mineralogical works in Brazil and Bolivia, then he moved to Chile. In this work he spent 20 years, Between 1848 and 1868, toured the country, emphasizing his recognition of the Atacama Desert. In 1875 he published in Paris his most important work, Physical Geography of the Republic of Chile.

Published by Carl Flemming in Glogau in 1875. There are three version of atlas, Comprehensive edition, with 100 map sheets, Medium edition, with 65 map sheets and Concise edition, with 25 map sheets. This is the large comprehensive edition, with 100 maps, contains maps of planets, stars, world, Europe, major countries in Europe, detailed regional maps of Europe, and 26 maps of other continents and parts of the world. Maps redrawn or completely revised for the 6th edition, engraved by F. Handtke. Includes table of contents in title page. Bound in half leather black paper covered boards with title " Sohr-Berghaus Hand-Atlas der neuen Erdbeschreibung in 100 Blattern." in gold on front cover. Heinrich Berghaus, German geographer has made a minor contribution to the atlas in 1847. Carl Flemming, publisher of the atlas, used this to mention Berghaus' name prominently on the atlas title page. Berghaus protested against this abuse of his name; The atlas has kept the 'brand name' of Sohr-Berghaus ever since.

1st issued in 1873, this is one of Thayer's smaller maps with 24 miles to an inch as the scale. Thayer issued his first Colorado map in 1871(see W.H.'s copy), called "Thayer's Sectional Map of Colorado" with a scale of 12 miles to the inch; next came this map in 1873 with eight editions to 1877; then in 1878 he published "Thayer's New Map of the State of Colorado" by Edward Rollandet with a scale of 14 miles to the inch; and finally in 1880 he published "Thayer's Map of Colorado" by Julius Bien (see our copy) with editions to 1882. Inside the front cover is a catalogue of Thayer's maps. On the map, red overprinting is used to show the land districts of the state and the mineral belt. Large hand colored and very detailed map of the United States and part of Canada. Up to date in the west, showing an extraordinary number of towns in California and Nevada. Topography is clearly delineated and Railroads are shown are far as they had been developed. Even Colorado is shown as a State (which occurred in 1876). Inset map of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. There is a quote from Stansbury regarding the desert outside of Salt Lake City (a bit out of date, but shows attention to detail). The map makers certainly used the most current U.S. government maps as sources. On the verso is the label of Lanee, successor of Longuet, a Paris map seller, with Etats Unis in pen. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 40 sections, and edged and backed with linen. Folds into a new blue cloth folding case 25x17 with "United States Stanford 1875" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Folded into brown cloth covers 13x8.5 which are gold stamped "Map Of The Thousand Islands." In the lower right is an "Index to Summer Cottages & Owners" which gives the name of various islands, their owner's name and winter residence. Property owners are shown directly on the map for the larger islands. Many of the owners are society figures from New York City, but also include George Pullman (inventor of the Pullman Sleeping Car) of Chicago and W.E. Story, a noted mathematician. The map was probably produced in a small edition for local use.
