Note: This is called Melish's greatest work (Ristow). 1st ed. 1822. Melish died in 1822; eds. were published in 1824, 1826, and 1832 by the state (which explains B. Tanner listing as publisher instead of Melish). Morris did a revised ed. in 1849 (see our copy). Melish spent more than six years on this monumental project, which he hoped would serve as a model for other state map. The map was sponsored by the state and based on individual county surveys. Map has outline color by county, blue cloth edging, and is dissected into 40 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets which slips into a half leather marbled cover 35x21 with "Pennsylvania" stamped in gilt on the spine.
