Published In: Traveller's & Emigrant's Guide to Wisconsin & Iowa. By Henry I. Abel. Accompanied With A New and Improved Map of those Territories. With The Addition of Parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

Publication Author: Abel, Henry J. ; Young, James H.

Publication Date: 1838

Publication Reference: Sabin 49 (dated 1839); Karrow 6-1645; Streeter 1928 (same map title as this copy); Graff 4.

Publication Note: Consists of "Map of the Settled Part of Wisconsin Territory Compiled From The Latest Authorities by Aug. Mitchell, Philadelphia. Improved and Published by Henry J. Abel of Wis. Ter. Compiled and Engraved 1838 by J.H. Young Philada." and a large fold out sheet of text, "Geographical, Geological and Statistical Chart of Wisconsin & Iowa." The map, 55x44, is an updated (we presume by Abel) edition of the same map that appeared in "Observations On the Wisconsin Territory" by W.R. Smith, 1838. The major map changes are in Iowa (now labeled "Iowa Tery.,") which shows many new counties and cities. The Graff copy has the same map as the Smith book. Graff: "Abel's map and broadside comprise one of the first few works containing reliable information about the northern part of the Old Northwest Territory."
