Publication Note: 1st Desilver edition, early 1856 (see late 1856). Many changes from the late 1856 edition all indicating that the transition from the Cowperthwait, Desilver and Butler 1855 edition has not proceeded as far as the late 1856 edition has: no maps of the Baltic and Crimea; the Nebraska map is unnumbered, lacks the Desilver border and has instead a typical Mitchell border uncolored and is entered in 1850 by Thomas Cowperthwait instead of by Desilver in 1856 as is the later map; the New York State map is published by Thomas Cowperthwait instead of Desilver; and the Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa maps have less political detail in the adjoining states. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "Mitchell's Universal Atlas" stamped in gilt on front label. Full color.
