Composite: Carte de la France. / (Cassini, Cesar-Francois, 1714-1784); (Cassini family) / 1790

Full Title: (Composite of) Carte de la France. Dediee au Roi. Par les directeurs et associes de la Carte de la France. 1790.

Author: (Cassini, Cesar-Francois, 1714-1784); Capitaine, Louis; (Cassini family)

Date: 1790

The Carte de France was published by four generations of the Cassini family from 1750 to 1815. It consists of 182 sheets at the same scale, allowing the sheets to be joined together to form a physical map of about 39 feet high by 38 feet wide. It is rich both in historical cultural information and exquisite graphic art. The map was the first national survey completed systematically, relying on the latest science of its time. This composite map is a 24 sheet reduction of Cassini's 182 sheet map. Mounted in 4 large sheets. Has key to symbols used in the large Cassini survey. Illustrated cartouche. "Reduite sur l'echelle d'une ligue pour 400 toises, d'apres les 180 feuilles de la grande Carte de la France levee geometriquement par ordre du Roi, sur l'echelle d'une ligue pour 100 toises." See Carte de France for the entire 182 sheets published as an atlas.
