New! Try viewing the map collection with the new LUNA 6.0 Browser

The David Rumsey Collection is available in two formats: the LUNA Browser and the Insight® Java Client. Limited content is available using a special GIS Browser that allows detailed overlays of historical maps and current geospatial data. In addition, the entire collection can be accessed with the Collection Ticker which works in conjunction with the LUNA Browser. Selected atlases can also be viewed.

The collection is available over the World Wide Web using a standard Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. This LUNA Browser format has been designed for the general public. The Insight® Java Client has been designed for the researcher and those desiring advanced software functionality. In order to view the Collection using the Insight® Java Client, special software must be downloaded. For new users, the LUNA Browser version is recommended.

GIS Browser - The GIS (Geographic Information System) Browser shows detailed overlays of maps and geospatial data.
Collections Ticker - An alternative to structured searching. View clickable streaming thumbnails of the collection.

Important! Firewalls, or Browser settings that block Pop-up Ads or Java, may prevent correct operation of Insight Java Client or Insight Browser. Test by turning off the Firewall and/or allowing Pop-ups and Java from this site only - then adjust your Firewall or Browser settings.

Important Note to AOL & CompuServe Users:
This site is supported in the AOL v7.0+ internal browser. It is not supported in earlier versions of AOL or CompuServe's internal browser. To view in AOL 6 or earlier, or in CompuServe, open either Netscape or Explorer while signed on, go to www.davidrumsey.com/view.html, and click on View Collection with Insight™ Browser.

Browser System Requirements:
Browser Insight operates through Internet Explorer 4.0+, Netscape Navigator 4.7+, Mozilla 1.1+ and Safari 1.2+ downloading DHTML and JavaScript to provide Insight user interaction. Browser Insight does not require installation or plug-ins, but does have some basic requirements and settings you need to know. Run Browser Insight on a PC or Mac that is 166Mhz or faster. Actions happen faster when images are kept in memory. More memory is an advantage for using images. You should have at least 800 x 600 screen resolution and 16-bit color depth. You can use 8-bit color, but will lose a significant amount of image quality in the David Rumsey Collection.

Collections Ticker Requirements:
The Collections Ticker requires the Flash player, version 6.0 or greater. The Collections Ticker utilizes the Insight™ Browser.

The Insight™ Browser and Java Client software are products of Luna Imaging, Inc. The GIS Browser was developed by Telemorphic, Inc. using their Java-based Maplicity(tm) software products. The Collections Ticker was developed by Ideum, in collaboration with David Rumsey.
