Context:

This relief sculpture, primarily a vertical view of Manhattan's skyscrapers, is one of Charles Biederman's earliest experiments with radically abstracted forms. Inspired by the paintings of Fernand Léger and Juan Gris, Biederman was first exposed to Cubism in New York City in the mid-1930s. The Cubists' fracturing of ordinary forms, as well as the geometric abstractions of Piet Mondrian, influenced Biederman to develop his own personal blend of these styles.Biederman also spent several years in Europe, where his fascination with the landscapes of such artists as Paul Cézanne compelled him to apply his technique to the study of nature. For the past fifty years, Biederman has lived in the small town of Red Wing, Minnesota, where he seeks to capture nature's underlying structure in three-dimensional form.
